First meeting of our new season.

The new season is nearly upon us! The first meeting is on Tuesday 7th September at 7.30pm and we’d be delighted to see you there. There will be news about the entertaining and informative events that have been arranged as well as presentations about the special events and workshops planned for the new programme.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Soon it will be the start of the new NDPS season, and we look forward to welcoming you to our first meeting on Tuesday 7th September 2010 at 7.15 p.m. Whether you are new to the club or already a member, this is for you. It will be an evening to show prospective new members the sort of things we do and the photographs we produce, with special focus on pictures from our 2010 Annual Exhibition. More details later. It’s also an opportunity to catch up with old friends or meet new ones.

We are pleased and proud to announce that on 14th September 2010 Tom Mackie will be presenting his superb images to the society. Tom is undoubtedly one of the world’s leading landscape photographers, and this is a wonderful opportunity to see his photographs and hear him talk about them. To find out more about Tom and his work, use this link to a post on the NDPS Forum -
http://ndps.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2512
This event is free for paid-up members of NDPS; for non-members tickets are available from Committee members at a cost of £10.

We hope you are all enjoying the summer and taking some great photographs, and we look forward to seeing you in September.

Funeral Arrangements

Details of the funeral for Reg Belcher are as follows:

10.30am, 19th July

Earlham Crematorium
193 Earlham Road
Norwich NR2 3RG

and afterwards at...

Black Horse
50 Earlham Road
Norwich NR2 3DE

In accordance with Reg’s wishes this will be a simple farewell. There will be no ceremony but there will be an opportunity, for any who would like to do so, to say a few words in remembrance.

No flowers please, but donations may be made to either of two charities:

Cancer Research UK
http://supportus.cancerresearchuk.org

MacMillan Cancer Support
http://www.macmillan.org.uk

There will be a cold buffet at the Black Horse afterwards. One of Reg’s requests was that his friends should have a drink to suitably wish him goodbye and so both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available at his expense.

Invitation to the funeral is extended to all who would like to come. I am well aware that there will be some who do not access this Forum and would be grateful therefore if someone (perhaps a committee member) could pass these details on to all NDPS members.

In order to have an idea of the number of those attending, please could you let Nel Hickson (formerly Helen Williams) know if you, or others you know of, are coming:
helen@prioritas.co.uk

If you are unable to let us know of your attendance that should, of course, most certainly not deter you from coming!

Mark Hickson.

Reg Belcher (1947-2010)

It is with sadness that we have to announce the death of Reg Belcher.

In the five years he was a member of the Society he had a big impact on committee life, serving as vice-chairman for a couple of months and then as chairman. As webmaster, he helped the Society maintain its web-presence.

Reg was, as members were aware, suffering from a recurrence of prostate cancer which had become increasingly aggressive. His final illness was short and has taken us all by surprise.

He is survived by his mother, Irene.

Further information will appear as it becomes known.

The Annual Exhibition - now open

I think it's important to publicly thank Rudi Polednik and his team of helpers for the exhibition which was officially opened by the Dean of Norwich Cathedral, Graham Smith, last night.

Personally, I was unconvinced by using foamboard to mount the images. In the new Hostry, on the Cathedral's own display stands, it was quite obviously the right decision. The pictures look stunning and, again, I have to admit, that this year's exhibition is much better than in the recent past: the standard of pictures is much higher, mounting is more consistent and the new venue is excellent.

SO, make sure you see it in the coming week and half before it comes down.

The Annual Exhibition

The official opening is Tuesday 25 May at 1900 - note the time.
Venue: the Hostry of the Cathedral.

Parking is possible in the close but limited.

Rudi will be seeking people to steward the exhibition. Please volunteer if you have not already done so.

Opening times for the exhibition are the same as the opening times of the cathedral. Opportunities to view the exhibition are limited on Sundays as the Hostry is only open after the morning service for a short time.

Print Group Entertains

This Tuesday (11th May), is an evening for sharing prints. All welcome, prints in final form, work in progress that you want to hear views about. Anything relating to prints. Please bring stuff along. This kind of evening is, we all know, very successful when there's lots of work on offer.

Don't forget the changes to the end of the season noted in the post below.

Changes to the End of the Season

The last two weeks of the season have been swapped around.

Mike Fuller will deliver his talk on practical monochrome in the digital darkroom on May 18.

The Annual Exhibition will be opened on May 25 (and will be held in the Cathedral Hostry).

(Thanks to Hazel for spotting the wrong month - now corrected.)

Rudi Polednik, our Exhibition Secretary, will be giving a brief demonstration on mounting images on foamboard for the Annuel Exhibition during the break at our meeting on Tuesday 13th April.

He is now accepting images for the exhibition.

The closing date for entries being Tuesday 27th April.

Message from Keith Garnham also posted on the Forum.

AV Success

Congratulations to Malcolm and Jenny Gee for their triumph in the 3rd Annual AV Competition on Tuesday night. An excellent mix of music, commentary and natural sound with seemless picture transitions was how the judges described it.

In second place was Belinda Buxton and third was Kevin Appleton.

The judges and Malcolm extended thanks to all those who took part and hoped that the comments offered will assist members in improving their AVs.

There is a workshop evening next month where Brian Harvey and Peter Larter will return to offer tips and hints on better AV.

Welcome to the New Committee

AGM minutes will be available in due course - usually a few weeks. However, I thought you would like to know something of the make-up of the new Committee:

Chairman - vacant
Vice-Chairman - vacant
Treasurer - Simone Massy
Asst Treasurer - Bryan Connell
Secretary - Keith Garnham
Asst Secretary - Clare Lister
Programme Secretary - Al Pulford
Asst Programme Secretary - Brian Ebbage
Competition Secretary - Brian Ebbage
Exhibition Secretary (Annual selected) - Rudi Polednik
Exhibition Secretary (Open entry) - vacant
Public Relations Officer - Andy Swain
Committee Members - Ben Loudon continues for a second year and Belinda Buxton was elected to the other post.
Projectionist - Norman Tottle

Chairing this new committee, in the absence of a chairman, will be the President. Mary Gogle hands over the office of President to Hazel Davidson having completed her two years of service. Given that the meeting was closed by the resigning chairman before proceedings were completed, the business of handing over the office of President will be marked at the start of this coming Tuesday's meeting (the AV competition).

Changes to Programme

This short message is to let you know that, at the suggestion of the judges, the NDPS Competition will now be restricted to one evening only, Tuesday 23rd March. The sequences have been sent to the judges for them to preview, and on 23rd March they will all be played, followed by feedback comments and the announcement of the results. With the number of entries at only 12, Brian Harvey and Peter Larter are confident that, providing we start promptly, this can achieved on one evening. I do hope that this will not cause you any inconvenience.

As regards the NDPS meeting to be held on 30th March, Keith Garnham is kindly organising a substitute topic, which will be announced in due course.

(sent by e-mail to me from Malcolm)

AV Competition deadline is Tuesday 09 March. Entries to be passed to Norman T.

AGM on March 16. Paperwork for the AGM itself should be available from 09 March.

The Studio Group Entertains

Tuesday 02 March, the Studio Group Entertains.

The group is inviting members to bring cameras along and take some studio pictures (we have some willing models already lined up for you). There will also be the opportunity to talk to members of the studio group and see their pictures. The evening will operate on an informal level.

Thursday, February 11, 2010

The final rules for the exhibition should now be on the website in the members area.  Here are the changes that apply to the rules - apologies for not getting it all in the same document.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING CHANGES TO THE 2010 RULES FOR THE ANNUAL EXHIBITION

MOUNTING OF PRINTS

Prints must be unframed and mounted on 5mm foamboard. The maximum size is A3 (420 x 297mm). Panoramic prints, (vertical or horizontal), must be no more than 840 mm x 420 mm. The class number, the title, and the entrant’s name must be shown in the top left-hand corner on the back of the mount. The title may also be shown on the front. Please note: oversize prints will be rejected.

KOBLENZ TROPHY

The theme for the Koblenz Trophy in 2010 is: ‘Norfolk Occupations and Pastimes’ (one or more occupations or pastime to be included). One entry is allowed for the Trophy and it can be in either a print (colour or mono) or a projected image. Note that entry for the Koblenz Trophy is an additional entry to the maximum number of prints of projected images.

This coming Tuesday (February 2nd)

This coming week we will be having an evening of members bringing their own work to share.

It will be an informal evening with lots of tables, so bring your prints or your memory sticks etc.. There will be a number of laptops available for you to show your images on.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Mark

WELCOME!

It has been a long time coming; however, NDPS now has it's own blog. There are a couple of reasons for this:

1. It can be your first stop for news about the Society and any changes.

2. It can act as a short cut to parts of the website you might need without you having to access the website direct.

Of course, with anything new, it will take a bit of time to get things going and so, until an announcement is made here that everything will be posted here, please continue to use the other channels of communication as well. Over the course of the next month, other members of the Committee will also have access to the blog and be able to post as well - this might be particularly useful with the exhibition coming, for example.
